When and Where
4-8 July 2022
School of Humanities, Woodland Road, University of Bristol, Bristol
Registration
Please follow this link to register. EARLY BIRD in-person registration (with reduced fees) closes on 31st March 2022. General registration closes in May. We encourage all – especially paper and poster presenters – to register early. This will significantly help us to finalise our hybrid program. We will publish a draft programme as soon as possible (but we need in-person presenters to register asap), followed by the full programme once full registration closes at the end of May.
If you are a panel organiser, please reach out to your co-panellists to ensure they are registered. We don't want anybody to miss the opportunity to register at our early-bird rates.
Please keep an eye out for a link to an important diversity survey appearing in your inbox with your receipt after registration.
What is included and what is not in the registration fee
Registration fees include free entry and welcome drink at the opening reception at MShed, heavily subsidized entry (£10, including welcome drink and food) to our rocking closing party at We the Curious, access to free walking tours in our city, and coffee break refreshments. At this point we are unable to commit to covering the cost of lunches. There are, instead, many inexpensive options in and around the University campus. Indeed, we encourage all participants to go out into the local neighbourhood for lunch and to enjoy the University's and city’s beautiful green spaces.
Refund policy
Registration payments will be refunded up until one month prior to the start of the conference. After that time, we regret that monies cannot be returned because the organising team will have already settled payments with suppliers.
Visa or not visa
You may need a visa to spend a few days in the UK to visit, study or work. At this link, according to your country of origin and your vaccination status, you can find all the requirements you need to fulfil in order to travel to Bristol.
Please look to secure any visas you might need for entry to the UK as early as possible. These things are taking quite some time to approve. If you have any questions/issues that you need to raise, or if you need documentation from us to prove attendance at the conference, please do contact the conference LAC at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Online participation
Now it is the time to inform us if you will be attending online or in person. Please go to your submission https://app.oxfordabstracts.com/stages/2027/submitter and click which you prefer. You will see we have removed the ‘undecided’ category – because we are now drawing up the programme. Individual submitters, please indicate if in person or online.
Panel organizers, please indicate if yours is in person, online or hybrid. We can accommodate hybrid only along the lines of a normal conference, eg. One person may be able to Zoom in to a panel, but panel organisers are responsible for coordinating this and providing the necessary equipment (such as a laptop). All rooms will have WiFi.
Anti-Covid-19 measures
We will comply with the measure in place in the UK in July. Click here for current UK Government travel advice. At this moment in time, the UK government has quite restrictive measures to enter the country (vaccination, tests, isolation according to individual conditions). Based on room size, number of people in a session and ventilation, the LOC can require the use of masks during the conference.
The conference venue, and the venues for the opening and closing events are all COVID-safe. All rooms are equipped with windows (which will be open), and/or air filtration systems. We encourage the wearing of masks in busy social spaces, will have hand sanitising stations, and ask that all conference participants respect each other’s personal space.
Membership & Donation
We received a significant number of applications for financial support to attend the conference. We invite you to renew your membership, if you haven’t done so.
If you have already paid your membership fee and if you are able, we are seeking donations towards (i) travel bursaries for early career scholars and colleagues from under-represented groups, and (ii) the ESEH Summer school. If you want to donate, please use this link.
Programme
The programme will be shared following the early bird registration period.
Summer school
The summer school will take place in Bristol on 10-13 July 2022 and aims to offer intermediate to advanced graduate students the opportunity to present and discuss their work, to network with other researchers from across the world, and to experience and learn from the environments and technologies around Bristol. The ESEH 2022 graduate school (An-)Hydrous Environments: Rethinking Water in Environmental History will explore the interrelationship between water and human society with monitoring the impacts of water on past environments and societies, and that of human society on waters. Check this link for more information.
Where to find information
If you could not find the piece of information you need neither here nor on the conference website, please direct all conference enquiries to the co-chairs of the LAC, Marianna Dudley and Andy Flack: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
You are very welcome to get in touch with them, although before contacting them check the links provided in this email and consider that our colleagues in the UK might be on strike (you can find out more about their actions here).
