With an interdisciplinary context, the event will take place virtually, featuring presentations by established scholars and young researchers from diverse professional and creative backgrounds.

Humanistic Uses of Herbaria - VIDEO

HUMANISTIC USES OF HERBARIA - VIDEO (March 19, 2021)
Herbaria, or collections of dried plants that usually include information about the place and time of their collection and the identity of the collector, have their roots in the sixteenth century and are of vital importance to the study and taxonomy of plants. Recently, they have acquired additional value as tools for tracking biodiversity loss or even as windows into past ecosystems. While their primary purpose is scientific, herbaria also have rich historical and even aesthetic dimensions. This program will focus on the history and relevance of herbarium collections, addressing the contemporary importance of herbaria to science and conservation. Four speakers will explore humanistic angles by engaging with history, the history of the book, art history, and contemporary art, thus placing the discussion at the intersection of the arts and sciences.
Co-presented by the NYBG Humanities Institute and the Plant Humanities Initiative at Dumbarton Oaks, in partnership with the NYBG William & Lynda Steere Herbarium

The ESEH 2022 graduate school (An-)Hydrous Environments will explore the interrelationship between water and human society with monitoring the impacts of water on past environments and societies, and that of human society on waters.

A Rede de História Rural em Português (Rural RePort), a Sociedade Portuguesa de Estudos Rurais (SPER) e a U. Algarve convidam à apresentação de propostas de comunicações e painéis até 15 Fevereiro 2022 (último prazo).
O Congresso tem como tema nuclear a Água. A presença e a ausência da água, doce ou salgada, são factores historicamente fundamentais na definição das comunidades, das relações formais e funcionais que estabelecem com os territórios, determinando muito do carácter das paisagens e das formas de povoamento, condicionando selecção de culturas, formas de exploração, tecnologias agrícolas e hidráulicas, tipologias construtivas e oportunidades económicas.
Eixos temáticos: 1 Património material e imaterial. 2 Relações sociais e políticas: cooperação e conflito. 3 A água nos sistemas agroalimentares. 4 Recursos hídricos, sustentabilidade e biodiversidade. 5 Gestão e regulação da água. 6 Água e mudança climática. 7 Usos económicos da água. 8 Outras temáticas.

Environmental Histories of Mediterranean Fascisms

Vol. 25 (2021): Environmental Histories of Mediterranean Fascisms
The Volume 25 is a Special Issue of Perspectivas - Journal of Political Science contains two articles that address issues relating to Spanish colonization. The first is about Colonization in Badajoz Province, and the second about the Environmental Coloniality in Francoist Spain.
The other two articles focus on European Countries. One of them analyzes the Italian fascist modernization and colonial landscape in Albania and the other one makes us reflect about Greece under Metaxas’ Regime.
The last two articles concern fascist colonialism in Libya and Mozambique.
